The BIG Cheese

If you’re a Birmingham (Alabama) young communications pro, you should know about “A Graduate’s Guide to the Cheese.”  Courtesy American Advertising Federation Birmingham, AIGA and some very talented people from BIG Communication, soon-to-be or current graduates can participate in this awesome networking and career developement opportunity.  

The Facebook group says:

“The idea is to invite students from all over central Alabama to attend a panel discussion that will cover what to the do’s and don’ts of building a proper résumé and portfolio.”

This is is the second session and it will include a panel of media pros.  The panel includes: 

-Two from Southern Progress who manage internship program (Carlton Kemper and Meg Dedmon, University Relation Rep)
-One from NBC 13 (still confirming who)
-One from St. Vincent’s (Liz Moore, VP of marketing)
-One from Big (Ford Wiles, chief creative officer)

The panel will answer questions about what they look for when reviewing resumes, talk about the interview process and spend some one on one time with attendees reviewing resumes and portfolios.

Claus – This isn’t yo’ momma’s Santa

I’m really loving the Palm Centro Claus commericals.  They crack me up on so many levels.  It’s like Santa said, “Screw these kids that don’t believe,” developed a cocaine addiction (you know to lose the weight) and then bought a new cell phone.  Here is one of the ads that’s airing on TV:

All Hail the Intern Queen!!

Faster than I could make a decision about a new WordPress theme, the Intern Queen had read my post about her blog, made a comment, sent some private tweets and put in motion changes to I AM INTERN.  Not only is she the royal purveyor of all things “intern,” she’s also awesome at this thing called “social media.”

Determine Your Variables, the Intership Experiment

 Internships are experiments in developing a career.  They can’t be completely controlled.  There are independent and dependent variables, and success or failure hinges on defining the variables before you begin (kind of  like all experiments).  

What’s my boss going to be like?  Am I going to be a glorified secretary?  How much am I going to learn?  Is it paid?  All of these are variables most likely out of your control.  Don’t fret!  There are two websites that can help take some of the stress away when searching for the variables.

Number 1 is QuarterLife.  This website is…. a lot of things rolled into one.  Almost to the point of being overwhelming.  Is it a site for an online webisode?  A social networking site for young creatives?  Or a place to find internships?  I think it’s a little bit of all of these.

However, upon digging into the website, I was actually a little underwhelmed with the content.  I got the feeling that the blog was created just so someone could say, “I have a blog that goes with my website.”  From what I could see the the posts read more like a “FAQ” page.  Before I visited the site, I was hoping for personal stories from the trenches, tips on intern interviews, resume advice or anything besides what I found.  The “Intern Queen” definitely didn’t deliver.  One thing I notice (and you can see it in the photo above) is that the Intern Queen Court is made up of all insanely good looking people.   I mean look at them!!

Overall, the internship directory is a great resource.  Especially if you’re looking for a creative internship in CA, FL, PA and NY.

Number 2 is  LOVE IT!!!  I’ll start off with the one thing I’m not crazy about: the colors.  It’s almost a little too girly, but since the vivacious duo behind are girls I’ll let it slide a little.  Now the PROS: as soon as you enter the site you see a big, interactive map of the US.  From there you can select the state to find internships that have been rated by peers who have been-there-done=that.  At the bottom of the BIG OL’ MAP OF THE US, there are the most recent reviews, the best and worst of the rated internships.  You can also search by location, industry and company name.  

This is very much a great resource in all ways.  It’s new, so it’s up to you to share your experience and help create the content on this site.

Both of these websites are worth bookmarking as you experiment with your career.

Free Music, Coming to a Campus Near You?

Could your campus get unlimited rights for downloading music?  I just read on that some colleges are in talks with music labels to create an agreement that would allow for students to legally download, share and enjoy the music they love.   

This would be an awesome change from the current practice of randomly tracking down and serverely prosecuting people for illegally downloading.  I’m not sure where I stand on illegal downloads: I want artists to be properly compensated for their work, but I don’t like paying for something when I know it’s just a few clicks away for free.  

According to MediaPost Columbia, MIT and Stanford are leading the charge. 

Currently, my college’s policy is to block programs like Limewire.  What do you think?  Would you choose a college because you could get unlimited music downloads? (I remember when colleges were giving away laptops to all freshmen)
